When we were taking Ruby for here evening walk we let her have a run on the park (we let her run when no dogs are close by).
We saw an Alsation about 100 metres away and decided it was still OK to let Ruby have a run and gallop after her ball and Frisbee
Ruby caught glimpse of the Alsation and decided to go and play with her ...Ruby wasn't aggressive just eager to play...however the Alsation had other thoughts and bit her on her back !!!
I suppose it was bad management on our behalf, but at the end of the day Ruby was bitten !
The incident occurred at 18:45 hours , so our vet was closed. We therefore had to drive to the other side of Nottingham to an emergency 24 hour vet !!
We sat in the vets for an hour and then the vet (a very nice vet named Stephanie) decide she had to have two staples in the cut and they have to stay in for approx 10 days !!!
Ruby seems OK, quite lively, but we feel guilty and upset for what was bad management on our behalf !!
Anyway we got home from the vets at about 21:30 hours so a long visit !! Oh and £123-00 lighter !!
The incident has meant I'm behind on commenting, so will catch up over Thursday and Friday !
SOOC , not the best image , but a record of something we'd rather forget !!
ah poor Ruby. glad it was nothing more serious. A rather unfortunate incident - you have to console yourself that you were in the park and there was plenty of room, so dogs were just doing what dogs do...doesn't make it any better - we've had several bite incidents where our dogs were on leads...irresponsible of owners to let their dogs off when they know their dog can be aggresive. Hope it doesn't ruin Ruby's confidence with other dogs.
Oh thats terrible poor little Ruby ! Don't blame yourself though Phil you can't wrap her in cotton wool & the Alsation must have been aggressive & should have been on a lead ..it could have been a child instead ! Keep clear of that place in case it's there again !! £123.00 was a bit steep !! Special tea tonight for Ruby !!
Had something similar happen when 3 neighbor dogs attacked my Zeke a couple years ago. The neighbor refused to admit guilt but agreed to pay the $185 vet bill because "she wants to be a good neighbor." What a load!
Poor Ruby!!! Im going to try and not get on my soapbox about your commentary Phil as I dont think it was bad dog management at all. My Holly is always getting me in trouble because she is so boisterous and loves to play. She runs up to every dog that she sees to check out a potential play and many dog owners get the hump about it but I believe dogs should be allowed to do their thing as long as they are not vicious. Bad tempered or vicious dogs should be on leads or muzzled and then we wouldnt have to worry about who are dogs run up to. Sometimes people panic because Holly is so big and their dogs are tiny but I try to point out that both dogs have waggy tails etc. Rant over Phil, hope Ruby recovers well and does not lose her friendly nature.
oh sorry to hear this... hope she is well soon.
you make these judgements every step of the way, and sometimes stuff happens (i'm remembering my black eye incident)...
ThiS is chez tragique. (never learned French but absolutely sure that someone on this site will correct me). Neat shot but more concerned about Ruby than your pic. Bit of a dog fanatic here; which is why I want to counsel the Alsation.
Oh dear it was awful hitting your page and seeing this - not what I was expecting. That Alsatian should have been on a lead it is a dangerous dog! The very least the owner should do is muzzle it. I hope you have reported it to the police. They take it very seriously round here and police keep tabs on anyone who's dog bites another dog, or if it is a person. Any more biting and that is it - doggy heaven. I also hope they have coughed up the vets bill (mine for David cost over £800 and I only got £100 off them, but they have kept it under tight control since). You should report it. There was a woman here with a mastiff and I discovered it had attacked and bitten a lot of dogs in the park - then the police did nothing, but that is no longer the case. I don't see why you should feel that you might have done something to cause the incident - an owner who is irresponsible enough to let a dog that bites roam free where other people walk their dogs is the problem, and is completely to blame. The trouble is it can cause behavioral problems in your dog later on if they become fearful and hide this with a display of aggression (Pearl). She should be ok if she is kept well socialised and meets nice Alsatians she can trust asap. At least she does not have the pack mentality that the whips have being in a group.
I do hope she is fully healed very soon! Give her a get well kiss and cuddle from me
Oh no!! As others have said wasn't expecting this! Poor old Ruby!! and naughty Alsatian! All I can say is speedy recovery and i love the idea of a collective wag and a kiss!!
