We are decorating our bedroom and we bought a nice red bedside table lamp from Wilko's .......We wanted two but our local Wilko's only had one. I rang another Wilko's store in Carlton (about 3.5 miles away) and they had one !
We drove over to Carlton Wilko's and bought the said lamp. Carlton Wilko's is in a very 1970's shopping precinct and opposite Wilko's is a bookmakers (a betting shop).
I don't know what made me go in the bookmakers (I don't bet ...apart from a lucky dip on the lotto) ..but I did ...and quickly snapped this shot on my android phone.
It's very grainy, noisy and not that sharp, but I like the urban-ness of the image, which works well in B/W.
This is a lone punter, confronted with 'information overload'....screens of info, racing cards, adverts, dog racing stats (greyhounds).
It was a one shot image...click on the android and straight out ...to the dismay of my wife......."what are you doing going in there ?.....and why do you want to take a picture inside a betting shop?....fool !!!"
Ah well a 'street shot' from inside a bookmakers !!!
The future of High Street betting shops might be under threat as the internet appears to be the betting method of choice for many punters.....or maybe the internet opens up the murky world of betting to alternate / new customers.
Very interesting shot and write up! Never seen one of these in the states yet. Never seen one before this photo... didn't even know such places existed!
I have only ever been in a betting shop on Grand National day & that's years ago! A man's world indeed !!! The ones I ever go past round here are usually quite busy, I think pensioners & others use them as meeting places, I'm glad you are being watched !!!!!! Good choice of b&w processing !!
It's funny because some places seem to have loads of bookies - maybe betting goes up when times are hard. I've only ever been in one to ask directions and even then I felt guilty!!
great shot Phil - always makes me laugh at the deluge of information presented to you at the bookies. Need a degree to understand it all! I had a pal who used to go to the bookies a lot - never liked going in, funny places!!
