Grass Roots Football - A literal interpretation

We have a saying in football "grass roots football". It means football at it's lowest level, no super star overpaid footballers, no massive stadiums ....it's football played locally, football played with heart and soul.

Well this is low level football, played locally. This is a stand at Arnold Town Football Club.

I think this image is almost a literal interpretation of the word as the stand is engulfed with grass and weeds !!!!!!!! I know the sky is a bit bland / burnt out but hey the image works.

A filler from a few weeks ago when I went to watch my local non league team.

This Saturday I'll be watching football in a modern stadium as I make this seasons 'home debut' at the Reebok Stadium to watch my team Bolton Wanderers FC

3 good things

my home grown tomatoes tasted nice

nice almost autumnal walk at lunch time

good work meeting with AA...that's the auto mobile association ....not AA
Ha nice mate... wait a couple more years and you'll be seeing Pompey turn up here one day :-)

Quite a crowd in watching then Phil!! I think these local teams are the salt of the earth & where the proper action is. Why does everyone seem to be looking over the fence...a corner shot? Good luck to Bolton Wanderers this season, perhaps this will be their turn!!!

I never understood why traditionally you'd sit in the stands and stand on the terrace!

What a piece of fun Phil. Love the weeds

Just love this, as a football stand it must be unique! Not very good for morale when you consider how small it is . . Or is it just that in Arnold, The men are so tough they don't need such luxury!?

Oh love this.........what a mini stand! As you say real grass roots and weeds and all.............glad you clarified the AA meeting!!

@tishpics patricia, thanks for the comments, there is another stand on the oppsite side of the pitch which has about 100 or so seats, which is probably more your non league type stand .....'the ivan long stand'. The ground is quite new , purpose built a few years ago (about 5 probaly) 'out of town' .........the previous ground was very ramshackle ....it was right in the town centre, but it's a long story as to why they had to move out !!!

@fannyb ha ha fanny, you like my play on words 'AA' and 'grass roots'
September 14th, 2012
@swilde thanks Sues :) I don't think they cut the weeds they just wait for them to die down in the winter !!

September 14th, 2012
Hahaa - it'll be the other AA if BW have a bad season! I love this 'stand' - ex bus shelter?!!
September 14th, 2012
@judithg thanks judith , i think it is a purpose built stand ......or one from the football equivalent of 'IKEA flat pack stands' !!!
September 16th, 2012
@caddick i don't think i've seen much 'football' either !!!!
September 16th, 2012
