This is Emma, who I met at last weeks Nottingham Goose Fair. I saw her with her tripod, mobile and microphone and smiled at her.
She smiled back and came over to me and asked if it was OK to interview me . She said don’t worry it’s only for my homework, for my university course. Emma is studying for a Masters degree in Broadcast Journalism at Nottingham Trent University
So she gave me the microphone and asked me a set of Questions.
“Do you come here every year Phil?”
“Yes, I came last night with my wife. I did some dusk, night time photography of the rides. I’ve come here today to do some daytime photography, I like photographing people, the light is better today for taking people photos than in the evening”
“Do you like the Goose Fair?”
“Yes it is a great event”
“What is your favourite ride?”
“I haven’t been on any rides. I am photographing people. I am doing a project on street photography, it’s called 100 strangers. I meet people, take their photo and then tell the story of the meeting”
That was a précised version of the interview, I may have expanded upon my strangers project a little more. I think my answer about not going on any rides sort of threw her off her script a bit as she may have been exploring why people chose various rides.
Anyway after the interview, Emma agreed to be one of my strangers and I took a few images of her. I gave her one of my cards and told her to contact me if she wanted a copy of some of the photos.
When shooting a portrait it is very difficult to get a uncluttered background at the fair, so I photographed Emma where she was standing as it helped tell the story of the meeting. The background was very colourful and I felt it distracted from Emma’s portrait, so I went for a mono photo.
When Emma is a famous journalist and broadcaster you will be able to see you saw her first on my 100 strangers project.
Thank you for letting me take you picture Emma, I hope you got lots of people to interview for your homework and I wish you well in your career in Broadcasting.
