"Old School / Traditional" Shop in Newark upon Trent. This is G.H. Porter Provisions, which to quote from their website "is a smokery and delicatessen established in 1890. They have an impressive heritage specialising in bacon and pork products which are purchased by discerning clients across
the East Midlands"
We had a lecturer at our camera club zoom meeting who presented a series of street photography images, shot from the hip with a wide angle lens, secretly, without anyone knowing they had been photographed. The images were good and told stories, but I was a bit uneasy about the lecturers shooting technique.
i thought about trying the technique for this shot, but decided against it. I raised my camera and gestured to the young lady that I was taking a photo. She started to move out of the frame, but I shouted.
"Stay where you are, it is a wide angle lens, you will be small in the frame, it will be a better photo with you in it"
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, go back to where you were"
The young lady moved back to her position and continued here phone conversation .... "there is someone taking a photo of the shop"
I shot a few images, nodded in appreciation of thanks to the young lady and moved on.
I did try a shooting from the hip later on, but i didn't feel happy about it. I think if we are doing street photography, we should be open about it and just blend in, just my thoughts, there is no right or wrong way !
Anyway, back to the photo , I think it works quite well.
Very nice shot. The old-looking shop brings lovely memories of the past with friendly shopkeepers ready to help you find what you can want. The young lady looks sweet and enjoying the publicity. I hope you sent her a copy of your picture, I'm sure she would be happy to have it.
I would take photos all the time from the hip if I had the right camera! I’m very scared of asking people if I can take their photo so subterfuge is my answer even if it’s sneaky! I don’t do it as I haven’t the right camera only a mobile phone but always loved the zoom lens on my old camera. You take great street photos & always upfront so an even greater star!
This is a lovely story & shot! Fave.
This is a lovely photo and she certainly does add character to the shot. She sort of seems like the opposite of selective coloring, as in selective black and white on color. So cool that you got the sign on the right in as well, documenting this time of dealing with Covid.
This is a lovely story & shot! Fave.
