Almost ready to come home from a trip to the sea, we stopped for a bit with the railings of Southsea Castle at our backs, and in front of us the sea with its comings and goings. Suddenly around the corner and along the prom came three policemen, one of whom on seeing my camera, detached himself from his colleagues and asked if I would like to take his photo.
Hoping he was really serious, I quickly said of course I would and went on to explain my strangers' portraiture work. I asked his name - Trevor - and told him mine.
'Where would you like me?' he asked. Quickly we settled on the railings with the sea in the background and I took a few shots.
Trevor told me that he has recently joined the M.O.D. police whose patch is Portsmouth Harbour and whose brief is to look after the warships. Prior to this work he served for 17 years with Sussex Police.
I asked about pastimes/hobbies and Trevor told me that he is a family man and his free time is spent with them.
Usually I have a card with me in case my subjects would like photos sent by email. However this is my first portrait since before lockdown - 3 months ago - and I had not even a scrap of paper or pencil. Trevor produced his pocket book and a pen and wrote down his email for me.
I promised to be in touch. And I wish Trevor all the best for his new role.
Very nice, Hazel! Glad he didn't mind having his photo taken...he has a nice smile. Interesting to see the different uniforms since my son has been a Deputy Sheriff in California for 14 years, also a family man with 3 sons.
Nice to see a smiling policeman - they are having a rough deal at the moment with all that's going on. I admire them all for what they do for our society 😁
What a great smile and how nice that he volunteered! The whole setting and pose is so relaxed. He instills trust that he's looking out for our safety. Nice portrait!
