I might have had a slightly better shot but I thought I could hear the beginning of a 'hiss'. This was one of a pair of swans on the river in Winchester and if it was starting to hiss it was at me, or my camera, because Jinks stayed home.
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
they hiss when they think they're in danger. she recognizes you as someone who goes there with perhaps a dog? the swans that live in the park near my home are gone. they had 5 cygnets and we came back after two weeks and everyone's wondering where they've gone. the other pair i posted here in the spring, their eggs just disappeared but they stayed around the river/park. nobody seems to have seen any other cygnets around the city, and if they have, they say they're gone! i wonder if they were being culled by the city. they're not indigenous here so they're not really protected as some say they're taking the food of the indigenous wildlife here. sorry for the long comment. your capture is very nice, details and i like the quirky pov.
Lovely close up shot Hazel. We have a pair of swans with six cygnets near us, with a single swan that gets a little hissy. It's on it's own (maybe the partner died) and it gets chased off on a regular basis by the pair. They are beautiful birds, I just love the sound their wings make when they fly past you.
Well done for getting such a super close up and definitely time to make a hasty retreat once they begin to hiss. Our swans are black here in Australia, but they can still get quite snappy.
Graham, thank you and for all your generous comments and favs.
It would be unusual for me to take my dog Jinks there but perhaps the swan mistook my camera for a dog!! Thanks for stopping by.
Thank you, Jill. I'd just love to get a shot of a swan in flight!
