The female swan and her cygnets. We think they were just newly hatched as we passed the nest at the start of our river walk and saw the female sitting on it and the male close by. On our return there was an empty nest, no sign of eggs, swans or cygnets. They were the smallest cygnets we had seen.

(Baby birds usually take several hours to hatch, so unless you had a really long walk, they were probably already hatched and hiding under mum at the start of your walk).

Ah, interesting and thanks for the info - probably the case. We walked for less than 2 hours.
