Jinks made such a good start on his recovery from having all those teeth extracted, eating soft food with a little help from his friends (hand feeding him now and then).
And then last weekend he developed fear of food. Back to the vet who gave him a thorough physical and said he was fine, just having trouble grasping food with no front teeth. I understand that but he'd been turning his head sideways to eat so why did he stop.
He's now on a diet of easy-to-eat tinned chicken and rice paté but still not doing fabulously.
I might yet have to resort to tinned chicken soup suggested by one of my 365 friends. Any suggestions gratefully received.
Poor Jinks it must be so hard for him to understand why he can't pick up the food. I hope you manage to find something he is really tempted by. Have you tried scrambled egg? They say eggs are good for dogs. Finlay is a very fussy eater but I can always tempt him with ham. I suppose you would have to chop it very finely. Let us know how he gets on.
Yes, had been feeding him on scrambled egg which he has always liked, also breast of chicken etc etc. Thanks for the ideas. I do think there is a bit of psychology going on here.....
Cute shot! When mine was sick we did egg and chicken, then canned, then soaking her dry food in warm water - which she still requires 3 months later. Maybe his mouth still bothers him while he's healing?
Tracy, thank you. Yes I think his mouth must still be sore. I've decided we'll stop offering him any treats (even moist ones) and just concentrate on tinned food for a while. How much easier it wold be if animals could talk! And I am in awe of vets who also have the owners to deal with as well as the animals who can't talk!.
Poor little man ! --such a worry for you , like Humans they cope with things in different way - Alfie is not a good eater unless its "Human food " and now has tinned mixed with his dry food but he has not had any illness or teeth extractions to prevent him wanting food . With one of the previous dogs an old vet suggested to make a lamb ,veg and rice stew (NO ONIONS) which Sandy would love in his old age . Also tinned fish eg pilchards mixed with a little boiled rice or soaked brown bread . Hope he will overcome this set back soon Hazel !
Poor little chap, I presume the vet has prescribed some analgesia post surgery for his sore mouth. I hope he starts eating soon, it is awful seeing our little companions unhappy Xx
Sorry to hear about Jinks it must be a worry for you . Another suggestion my cats liked chopped chicken livers when they were not eating they would always gobble these down.
awww I don't know what to advice haze. Ruby enjoys milk as a little drink . Have you tried fish ? a little poached fresh fish (boneless obviously) goes down well with the little whippet sat next to me :)
Thank you all for good wishes and practical suggestions to help Jinks get back to his usual (greedy) self. He did a bit better yesterday and then I got a tip from our dog groomer/breeder: "Raw mince". She said she feeds it to all her puppies. I fed him a good bit this a.m. but so slow and reluctant to start. Then I thought how puppies would be held and fed and kept him on his lead after the p.m. walk and sat with him on my lap and he ate it all quickly plus some kibble. He didn't have to wonder abuot coming to see what I was offering because it was right under his nose - not exactly force feeding - maybe positive feeding!!! Thanks again. And remember "Raw mince!"
