Philately

One of the cool things about parenthood is learning about the things that catch your children's interest. In the case of our older daughter, childhood interests were dance, flute, piano and stamps (in alphabetical order). Jen and I had a character-of-a-teacher to begin our study and knowledge about stamps.

I recently came across a box labeled "Jenny's stamps". Once friends and family know you're beginning a stamp collection, the cut-off corners of envelopes come flooding in!

This image immediately reveals some very common stamps, many of them international, which was a benefit of working at a university. Stamp-collecting didn't "stick" with Jenny, so most of these will probably go in the recycling bin, but one offshoot was something I started: "self-adhesives"!

Jenny was interested in stamps about the time the US Postal Service first issued self-adhesive stamps: you know, stamps you don't have to lick! I figured for $5-8 I could tuck away a sheet of these each time a new stamp was issued, so now I have more than $130 worth of postage!

I think the first one was a 29¢ pine cone stamp. Face value of a sheet of 18 was $5.22 and one price found online was about $8. Not an exorbitant return, but interesting!
It is amazing how collecting can affect the prices, but all in all a great thing to collect.
