“Clare, we’re in Stockholm!”

Today we traveled by train, http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2012-10-13
from Copenhagen's Central Station (“København H”) to Stockholm's Central Station (“Stockholm C”). We were met at the station by our group leader for the next several days, Caroline. We were transported by shuttle bus to our hotel on Karlavägen, http://www.scandichotels.com/Hotels/Sweden/Stockholm/Scandic-Park/

Before dinner as a group at the hotel, Clare and I explored the area around our hotel a bit, exchanging currencies for Swedish Kronor. For the next several days we'll be dividing Swedish Kronor prices by 8 instead of 6 as for Danish Kroner.

The photo is in Humlegården, a major park in Östermalm in Stockholm. It is the location of the Royal Library and in the centre of the park is a large statue of Carl von Linné, better known as Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist, who laid the foundations for the modern biological naming scheme of binomial nomenclature (genus-and-species). He is known as the father of modern taxonomy, and is also considered one of the fathers of modern ecology.

Humlegården is a park that has evolved from a 16th century royal garden to a public park with a play area, skateboard ramp and summer café, http://www.visitstockholm.com/en/See--do/Attractions/humlegarden/

Part of my reason for taking and keeping this photo was yes, the tree-lined, paved path with all the golden leaves on the ground, but also how low in the sky the sun is at almost-3 p.m. (1500). This should not be a surprise if one notes that the latitude here is more than 59° north: 59 20 23.77 N, 18 04 25.28 E

I'm told the trees are probably Linden trees (genus Tilia), also called Basswood and, apparently in the British Isles, Lime trees, though they are not closely related to the plants that produce the fruit we know as limes.

@espyetta This was one of the more important personal reasons for retiring when we did. The 8-hour, over-ocean flights don't get easier with age!
