I like the interference pattern in the water from arriving back at the dock and “slamming on the brakes” with the oars. (If I allow myself to coast, then I have farther to row back to the dock and at this point I'm exhausted until I catch my breath.)
Recently a *really* generous friend gave me an NK "Speed Coach GPS" as an early 60th-birthday gift and to mark my reaching 20 million meters rowed on indoor rowing machines.
The speed coach is an electronic device to take in the rowing shell with me. It tracks every stroke and measures the three things that rowers care about: distance, time and stroke rating (strokes per minute, or "spm").

This is the third day I've taken the speed coach; today's workout:
• 2,092m in 11:45.7 (2:48.9) at 18.5 spm (warm-up)
• 4,242m in 22:52.2 (2:41.8) at 22 spm
• 2,895m in 15:16.9 (2:38.7) at 23 spm
Total workout: 9,229m (not quite 10K) in 49:54.8. I'm still rowing our Maas Aero, which isn't the fastest shell we have, but I hope to take out the Coffey soon!
