Philadelphia Fleabane by rhoing

Philadelphia Fleabane

At least that’s my conjecture (Erigeron philadelphicus), rather than Eastern Daisy Fleabane (Erigeron annuus). (I’m certain of the genus, but there are several species within the genus.) However, given the date of this photo, the downward-facing buds and the width and number of ray florets, this is more likely Philadelphia Fleabane (Erigeron philadelphicus).

Taken on a walk with Clare in Chautauqua Bottoms in Carbondale.

From Missouri Botanical Garden: “Genus name comes from the Greek words eri meaning early and geron meaning old man in reference to the early bloom time and downy plant appearance suggestive of the white beard of an old man.

“Specific epithet means of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

“The fleabane name reportedly comes from a once widely held theory that this plant repels fleas.”
