“Visiting associate professor” at the university in anthropology and a friend through our friends Jeanne and Raymond. It’s a story of serendipity how Vytis helped connect a family in southern Illinois with their cousins’ families in Lithuania. For many years — almost 12 years since my previous post — he has been visiting the U.S. regularly to teach classes here and do more research on Lithuanians in the U.S. His curiosity about American culture and his experience living under Soviet rule have led to many interesting conversations. It’s refreshing at times to have an “outsider” force you to think about things you take for granted and don’t normally analyze. I also appreciate that he enjoys good IPAs and good bourbons.
