Pileated Woodpecker on the Move!

Was at least able to get a little closer shot and more on level to see this guy. And managed to get that head stopped for a second. Most of the other shots were blurred.
They are such unusual looking birds - glad he stopped beating on that poor tree long enough to catch him! They are so insistent!

Very nice, Rick. Great you got this shot pretty sharp. Not surprising that other shots were blurred; 400mm telephoto and 1/40 s shutter speed. You should try shooting over a thousandth of a sec if you are handholding.

Beautiful capture

Good find and great clarity, the woodpeckers I find are hyper and hard to track/freeze.

I agree with Martin, even with a good VR system I hang at around 1/300 give or take with a 450mm, and bump up to 1/600-1200 to stop action.

But if you are happy, then that is what counts!

@mjalkotzy @teriyakih thanks Martin and Terri. I try to keep the shutter speed up, but don't always remember to do it. I've been trying to crank some additional ISO on some of the shots lately and they've worked out pretty well. This new lens does seem to have a really good VC component on it, so it works pretty well in low light and slow speeds. Just got to remember to adjust everything in these low light conditions. :-)
