My first thought wa s "What on earth??" - what neat patterns whoever he is - looks like a Halloween bug - just a little late :) Could he be a crimson speckled moth? That was the closest I could find to those patterns.
Wow, what a great find and shot. A most unusual looking whatever, love the colour and patterns. Pity you did not hang around to see the open wings. A first for me too.
