The Stanthorpe region was a resettlement area for soldiers returning from WW1. They were given a 50acre block of bush - they then needed to clear it - build a shelter - survive the cold- find a way to make a living from it......
@casablanca Hi Casablanca - it was a sad story too - I don't think they received much support and it was quite difficult to make a living from 50 acres of granite country. It would be interesting to see how many of the small holdings were still in the same family - I fear it may not be very many! :)
@olivetreeann Hi Ann. You are so right Ann. And the different areas had names like Amiens, Pozieres, Passchendale - all the theatres of the war! That seems cruel to me!!
Lovely landscape..like your low point of view and the grasses....and the history is a whole other thing...did the government think this was a reward for returning soldiers???
@granagringa It seems to have been an awful way to treat the returning soldiers. And to have the villages named after the various theatres of war just seems cruel. I don't think many of them made much of a success of it. Even today a lot of the allotments are 50acres - from the original scheme. We bought two lots side by side - and even on our 100 acres I wouldn't like to be trying to make a living!
