Pingvellir National Park - a World Heritage Site

The Alpingi ( parliament ) of Iceland was founded here in AD930 and assembled here each summer until the the end of the 13th century. The adoption of Christianity took place here around 1000AD. The foundation of modern Iceland in 1944 also occurred here. The area shown here is just adjacent to one of the cliffs forming the Rift Valley
I would love to visit Iceland, I bet it was amazing

Pretty area- If I was a wealthy woman, Iceland would be one of the countries I'd visit. Good shot!

I'll just have to enjoy other 365-ers photos of Iceland I'm afraid. Wouldn't live anywhere but Oz, but it does make Iceland (and other places) an awfully long way to travel, not to mention expensive.

Fascinating place

You are seeing so much on your travels and passing on so much really interesting information to accompany the photo journal of your trip. It is great to get to see the sights through your lens :)

@lynnz Hi Lynn - this area was one of my favourites - it had such a variety of landscapes and such an incredible history. :)

@30pics4jackiesdiamond Thanks Jackie - we added Iceland to our itinerary as a last minute decision - best thing we did - it was amazing.

@craftymeg Thanks Margaret - a real photographer with a proper camera would just have a ball in this country!!

@madeinnl Hi again Ko - the country is beautiful - we didn't get a chance to meet many locals - most of the sightseeing is done on day drives - with little contact with the locals. We tended to meet more people in the other Scandinavian countries - they were lovely.

@rosie00 We also had no idea of what to expect - it was all so strange compared to the other Scandinavian countries.

@olivetreeann And I think you would enjoy it too Ann - but it did tend to be expensive...

@golftragic Yep - the trip over is not good - such a long time to sit on a plane. That's one reason why we stayed away for so long - we figured once we were over there we might as well make the most of it....

@casablanca It was probably our favourite - especially from a landscape point of view - but the history of some of the other areas was also fascinating. So much to see in the world!! I think we need to be younger!! :)

@4rky Why, thank you so much 4rky! I really appreciate your comment - it's so easy to get carried away with your trip and bore everybody to bits!! I'm so pleased you've found it interesting. Thanks again! Cheers Rob

@jgpittenger Thanks so much for your comment Jane - it has been a truly interesting, packed holiday - and all so different to home. It's been really nice that so many people have been kind enough to follow along with us - I've truly appreciated their comments and their patience - so many holiday photos!! Cheers Rob

@robz That's one of the main reasons I've remained so resistant to travelling to Canada, Iceland etc. We can't affort Biz class and I, for one, can't face the thought of being sardined into Cattle class for that long now I'm old, with lots of bits that tend to play up if I can't move around.

@golftragic Hi Marnie - Errol feels exactly the same as you. We went Singapore Airlines and booked about 5 months earlier when they had a special on the Premium Economy Seats. They were about $3100 each for the return flights - with a 3 hr stopover in Singapore each way. The seats are much bigger - wider and with much more leg room and leg rests which come up like a reclining chair. Much more comfortable - I even slept quite well. Obviously not as good at Business Class but pretty jolly good. I think it was about $1000 extra - cf economy return. I whinged at the time - but it was worth it - but I'm not telling Errol! And Singapore Airlines are just so good. :)

@robz You did very well Rob, that trip would be bearable in PE, and well worth the extra grand or so. We usually fly Singapore, but are going with Emirates on our next adventure - all part of the deal. In cattle class too, but can't expect much else when the flights are thrown into the deal for heaps less than normal cost.

@golftragic They have sent you with a good company though - I like Emirates. Is this your trip to Egypt - or have I got confused - as usual? I think if I went to one of those areas I would do exactly what you are - go with a tour group. I think it would be a bit scary to try to do it alone!! You should have a great time!!

I would love to visit Iceland, I know I would love it. Such beautiful scenery.

@robz This year's trip is India and Sri Lanka with Travelmarvel which is APT's second-tier company. We've done several trips with them and love going with them. Quite a bit cheaper, but seem to have everything we'd want. Next year is Egypt and Jordan, that's with Bunnik's, small group tour specialists and also very reputable. No way would we consider going to those places except with a tour group, far too dicey. Emirates for both trips I think. Not unhappy with that at all, they're good.
