The search for sapphires....

A totally different place to live - not for the faint hearted!
Crikey, you'd have to find an awful lot of sapphires to compensate for living there.

I have seen so many documentaries on opal mining, I suppose the living conditions are similar.

Did you manage to get any free samples?

@golftragic LOL, so true Marnie. And unfortunately the surface ones have been pretty well mined out. They have to go a long way down now so many of the original miners no longer fossick there - sad because they were real characters. Errol spoilt me though - with a gorgeous orange sapphire ring - an amazing colour! :)

@ludwigsdiana That's an interesting idea Diana - and over here there are opal mining towns very similar to Rubyvale. But then there is also one where all the miners live in the old opal mines - because they are always cool in the hot, hot summer. Makes for an interesting visit! :)

@onewing Hi Babs - no freebies - but Errol was kind enough to buy me a gorgeous orange sapphire ring as a momento! :)

@haskar Incredibly so Hasker - fascinating to drive around - but you have to be careful not to go too far down small tracks - some ot the miners protect their claims very actively! :)

@robz I have a golden sapphire ring which I've had for over 50 years but rarely wear. When I was in Sri Lanka I bought a pair of gorgeous golden sapphire ear studs from a huge business in Kandy and I do wear them a lot. Not cheap, but much cheaper than Oz and I could be confident of the quality, our tour guide was a highly qualified registered gemologist who closely inspected everyone's choices for any flaws.
