A brave little fellow

The young starlings seem to be fearless at the moment and this one was only a few feet away from me. I think he thought I was going to provide a second helping of sultanas and suet pellets because he was sitting on the sundial where I put them at breakfast time! My camera is on its way and should be with me today. I just hope they deliver it before 3pm as I have to pick my grandson up from school in Bedford and there will be nobody here between 3 and 5pm. Mrs Quacker came to visit this morning and had a drink but didn't really want any of the food I had put out. She then went and laid down on the grass for a snooze. When I was outside gardening I noticed something in the grass where she had been sitting and lo and behold it was an egg! It looks more like a hen's egg than a duck but she is not the usual mallard duck anyway. I have put it in the cupboard where it is warm and wonder whether it will hatch out. It was cold to the touch by the time I found it though so probably won't be any good
great close up

Hahah yes snap and funnily enough they really are fearless at the moment, I wonder why and what changes this, obviously not instinct.

Oh what a shame about the duck's egg. Looks like the starling is going to have a long wait.

@caddick @lucypics @busylady Thanks for your kind comments. Lucy I think it is probably the fact that they haven't learnt from experience about how some humans can be horrible to them. Obviously they know we are the nice ones! LOL

Love it when the young starlings fledge - they make such a racket round the neighbourhood, you can hear them coming a mile off! My suet disappears in seconds when their about! : ) Keeping my fingers crossed for your duck egg!!! : )

Lovely shot...too bad he missed breakfast!
Ducks don't lay all their eggs at one time...one a day I think and so don't start incubating until all laid so that they hatch at about the same time. Therefore they do get cool sometimes....may be that was her nest site?
