Just walk down a 25 metre incline from the Azure Window and voila` The Inland Sea. This is also within the Dwejra complex on the candidate list for UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. It is a small sea lake connected to the open Mediterranian Sea by a narrow tunnel through the cliffs. The tunnel is wide enough to allow the passage of small boats. It is thought that the Inland Sea started life thousands of years ago as a a sea cave; the roof of the cave later collapsed leaving the basin as it is today. However, my personal opinion is that this is a depression in the land right behind the cliffs where a small valley ends.
In summer, boat rides take tourists from the Inland Sea, out through the tunnel to tour by boat the area. Diving expeditions leave from the small quay regularly and diving lessons start within this basin.
The few buildings in the area are boat houses with a few fishermen’s dwellings; one of them has been converted as a small bar that sells snacks drinks and ice cream. Thank God, government is taking all necessary measures to ensure that no further encroachment of land in the area happens.
