Shot taken from the top of a platform over Calypso Cave.
Ramla Bay is located at the bottom of a rich and fertile valley between Xagħra, and Nadur, Gozo. The name is short for “Ir-Ramla l-Hamra” - the Red Sandy Beach - for its golden-reddish sand. The area around the beach provides some very rich historical treasures. Roman remains lie beneath the sand and, close to the shoreline, are the remains of 18th century fortifications built by the Knights to stop enemy troops landing in the bay. These fortifications hid two stone mortars known as “fugasses”, which used to be packed with loose stones and gunpowder. Overlooking the bay is the famous Calypso Cave.
According to tradition, Calypso Cave is the cave referred to by Homer in The Odyssey. The nymph Calypso lived in this cave and it is where she entertained Ulysses for seven years before he resumed his journey. Calypso Cave is in fact a series of caves and, according to some these extend right down to the sea. I have been in only one of this said series of caves which is now closed as it is considered in dangerous conditions.
