Abruzzo Day 3 – 18th April
Another place we visited was this very old abbey in Fossacesia. It is dedicated to San Giovanni in Venere (St John in Venere). The coach had to park some 200 metres up the road and on our walk to the abbey this cute little dog came along looking for a caress. And it got it, as you can see. I couldn’t resist posting this shot.
Inset is a shot of this marvellous old portal of the church/basilica.
The name of the place – San Giovanni in Venere – derives from the fact that it was built on the site where a temple to the goddess Venere had been built in 80BC. The Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere includes a basilica and the monastery proper. They were both built in the early 13th century.
Thank you very much for looking and for your wonderful comments and the fav’s on yesterday’s picture.
