I have sorted the pictures I took on the first day of our holiday.
We arrived at our agritourism lodging on a hill just opposite the lovely medieval town of San Gimignano. The first thing I did was to take a few shots of the town on top of the hill just opposite to us. I have been to San Gimignano a few years ago so the view didn’t surprise me. The tall towers are there as a symbol of wealth of the owners. There are many other medieval towns with towers just like these erected to show how wealthy the owner were.
On a subsequent day which we spent touring the town, I went on the highest of those towers to capture the astonishing view of the surrounding countryside.
Thank you very much for looking and for your comments on my previous pictures.
We found these hill top fortifications amazing as we crossed Europe. Not a feature of early Australia. We settled down by the rivers so towns are associated with waterways.
@ubobohobo Thank you for your comments. Towns in Europe, in the medieval period and before, were built on top of hills so they could be better defended. Still they were as close as possible to waterways.
