Shot taken on 30th June – the 5th day of our vacation to the Black Forest.
This is the high altar of Strasbourg Cathedral. I was about to cut out that man at the bottom of the picture but decided to leave him there to give you a sense of scale of this great building. There are beautiful stained glass windows in there but I decided to post this shot as many of you may have seen them, or windows like them, elsewhere.
Joke: Renovation works were being carried at the cathedral. Workers rigged a "cage elevator" inside so they can get material up and down to the upper floors. A characteristic of these "cage elevators" is that the doors (gate) must be closed for the elevator to move to another floor.
One day one of the workers, Peter by name, takes the elevator to the
top floor and forgets to close the door. After a while the sexton
rings for the elevator from the ground floor but it will not come down. After a couple of times, to no avail, he yells up
for the worker to send the lift back down. Visitors to the
cathedral were treated to this sight: The sexton of the cathedral, head
tipped up, yelling up to the heavens: "Peter! CLOSE THE GATES!!!"
Thank you so much for looking and for the lovely comments and the fav's on yesterday's picture.
A huge cathedral and a great place to view from the outside steps! The cathedrals in Austria and Germany are so historic and beautiful - its so lucky they escaped the war!
WOW, what a beautiful place and huge!!!!!!!!!! The window must be gorgeous!! Did you go to the top of the alter? The paintings on the wall are awesome!!! FAV!
Cute joke! It looks like a splendid altar- do you know the people who are represented on each row? I'm guessing the top most toward Jesus are the disciples, but I'm curious as to the others. Great shot!
