One last shot from our weekend in Gozo of a fortnight ago.
This is the monumental entrance of Fort Chambray which was funded and built by Jacques Francois de Chambray, Knight of the Order of St John and Malta and Governor of Gozo from 1749 up to his death in 1756. The fort was completed in 1757.
The fort was originally intended to be a new fortified city like Valletta, and eventually the new capital of Gozo instead of the Cittadella but the inhabitants refused to transfer themselves to the new habitation and the fort never developed into the city as planned.
Fort Chambray is gradually being rehabilitated and converted into – as it is being advertised - a Centre For Luxury, Excellence And All The Good Things In Life while retaining it’s historic features – entrance is through another area. When we tried to go in there to have a look we were stopped by a Security Officer. If I win the Grand Lottery I may consider buying a second residence right here.
BTW the group of people you see in the picture were rehearsing a pageant for Holy Week.
Thank you so much for viewing and for all your comments and fav's and also for putting my shot of yesterday on tp and pp. Very much appreciated.
That looks like some fortres, love the SC too. I am not quite sure have I visited this, I think I visited Gozo while I was in Malta so very possibly here too....
Beautiful shot and nice history lesson. I'm amazed at how much of the architecture across the pond from the US has survived in such great shape. Our country was just getting off the ground so there not a lot of really old structures.
Great stonework and textures makes a great shot in B&W Fav.
