Our last day was in Rome from where we caught the plane back to Malta.
Shot taken inside the Pantheon. I saw the Pantheon from the outside the last time I came here but it was closed to the public so I was very happy to be able to see it from the inside this time.
I prefered this shot to many others because it shows the light entering from the oculus and onto the wall. The oculus (the opening at the apex of the dome) and the entry door are the only natural sources of light in the interior. Throughout the day, the light from the oculus moves around this space in a reverse sundial effect.
The Pantheon is a former Roman temple completed about 126 AD and is one of the best-preserved of all Ancient Roman buildings. The dome was possibly intended to symbolize the arched vault of the heavens.
Since the 7th century, the Pantheon has been used as a church dedicated to "St. Mary and the Martyrs" but informally known as "Santa Maria Rotonda".
