Piazza Navona is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian of the 1st century AD, and follows the form of the open space of the stadium.
There are three fountains to adorn this very popular piazza. In the center, taking pride of place, stands the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi or Fountain of the Four Rivers by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
To the southern end of the piazza is the Fontana del Moro, designed by Giacomo della Porta and erected in 1575. In 1654, Bernini carved the central figure, a muscular Triton riding a dolphin, that resembles a "Moor."
At the northern end is the Fountain of Neptune (1574) also created by Giacomo della Porta; the statue of Neptune, by Antonio Della Bitta, was added in 1878 to create a balance with La Fontana del Moro.
