From our fifth day and last full day in Rome.
We had in mind to visit this villa on our first day when we toured Trastevere, but by the time we got to the Villa it was past 1.00pm and the Villa was closed. I knew it closed at 1.00pm but there was so much to see on the way that we didn’t make in time. So we decided to go immediately after we left St Peter’s on this last day in Rome.
This is The Loggia of Galatea which takes its name from the decoration frescoed on the vault by Raphael and his workshop in 1518. Having seen the four Raffaello rooms in the Vatican Museum many years ago I was eager to visit Villa Farnesina. The paintings however are more from his workshop (his students) than by Raffaello himself but magnificent still.
Villa Farnesina was constructed between 1505 and 1511. The owner, Agostino Chigi, commissioned artists as Giulio Romano, Il Sodoma, Sebastiano del Piombo, and Raphaello Sanzio da Urbino, or famously known as Raphael to decorate it. Agostino Chigi became Pope Paul III in 1534.
The interior of the villa is fantastically frescoed from top to bottom.
Thank you so much for all your visits, your kind comments and for the fav's. Always appreciated.
