More shots taken days ago when I drove to Mġarr area which is mostly an agricultural hub. Two more shots of strawberry-growing.The guy on the right was lovingly caring for his little patch of strawberry plants. The furrows in the red soil makes me believe he has potatoes planted there. Potatoes are very popular and the quality of our product is excellent. As far as I know, potatoes are the only agricultural product that is exported, normally to Holland, and not in massive quantities. This is because they get a better price than in Malta and then we Maltese have to buy imported potatoes to make up, but that is business. What is left of our agricultural land is not even enough to feed our ever- growing population. The shot on the left shows more rows of strawberries in another field.
Thank you very much for your visits, for your comments and for the fav's.
It's very nice looking soil - looks like it could grow anything. It also sounds as if Malta is experiencing the same thing as Australia - many of the market gardens, growing on wonderful soil just outside city centres, have been sold up for development. Hundreds of houses sitting on such fertile soil! It's all a bit of a worry. I really like your shot of the farmer in his field.
Our ten year old grandson was showing us their strawberry patch in NZ last night. Quite a few red ones even though quite early on in the season....the scale if this enterprise looks massive!
Very interresting show of you agriculture.of the strawberries. Here I see them being grown in pots placed in gutters at man's height. No problems with snails and easier to harvest.
