From the 6th day of our Athens holiday - 18th February, 2023.
To the left is the Lions’ Gate, Mycenae. You may see the lions carved above the entrance to this ancient city. It is located on a small hill between two larger hills on the fertile Argolid Plain. It was a very prosperous town in ancient times and gave its name to an entire civilization, the Mycenaean civilization, that flourished from about 1,600 to 1,000 BC. Today except for this gate there isn’t much else to be seen though a walk I had around the ruined city is a must and enjoyable, too.
To the right is the Treasury of Atreus or Tomb of Agamemnon, not more than a 5 minute drive from Mycenae. It is a large tholos or beehive tomb constructed between 1400 and 1200 BCE. It is the largest and most elaborate tholos tomb known to have been constructed in the Aegean Bronze Age, and one of the last to have been built in the Argolid. I was amazed at how they built the dome in stone so many thousands of years ago.
Thank you very much for all your looks, for your comments and for all the fav's on yesterday's picture.
