Olvera Street in Los Angeles by stray_shooter

Olvera Street in Los Angeles

Some of your 365ers got together for a little shooting around the picturesque Historic District in downtown L.A. today. Louise and Ken, @weezilou, Anita and John, @aglennc, and new addition to the gang, Marshall, @mbrutus, (oh, and I, too) got together, riding the train into Union Station and walking from there into and around the Historic District (historic being a relative term to those of you in places like Europe and Egypt). Olvera Street, described by people who apparently decide such things, rates among the Top Five streets of America, and dates back to 1781. This shot shows some of the merchants that push cheap souvenirs, one of which you can view here, http://365project.org/stray_shooter/extras/2017-04-18 , and that's the Los Angeles Post Office Terminal Annex in the background. L.A. architecture is pretty much either Spanish Mission style buildings or glass and steel reflecty stuff. Both of them crumble into pieces equally in earthquakes.
Great contrast of the mission and the market below.

Nice shot, Ron. But did you have to include that last sentence. It's hard enough to go to sleep every night as it is.

The color of the flowers and the serapes and tiny guitars on sale at Olvera Street really contrast with the stark white of the buildings beyond the neighborhood. I like this one, Ron.

Like Anita, I also noticed how gorgeous and white so many of the "newer" surrounding buildings are. I took about 150 usable photos, and was almost disappointed when I'd gone though them all and wanted more! There's so much to be had, but we did use about half the time just talking : ) And as for those "cheap souvenirs" I might just dip into my bag and post another this evening...

Glad there are no earthquake likely! I saw Louise and Ken's shot too. Good to see parts of LA I've never seen before!

Looks a great place for your meet up :)

Fabulous.

The composition of this pic is so good, with the trees framing the distant mission. That pink bougainvillea just about steals the show tho. Great commentary too, as always.

The picture is great but I also love hearing the story, about the street and about the 365ers. I hope you'll post more from your time together.

More holiday memories coming back was in the market in May 2008 and that tree on the left was full of colour, another great street shot full of wonderful detail and colour Ron:)

I am enjoying my tour of LA curtesy of your California 365 meet ups!! Always so colourful. Lovely contrasting image!!

Very nice

@taffy Thanks Taffy. Contrasts like that all over the place. A plethora of photo opportunities - c'mon out and give it your best! ;-)

@mbrutus Ha ha - hey, those shakers are good for business.....my business anyway. ;-)
April 20th, 2017
@aglennc Thanks Anita. Really enjoyed spending the day with you and John. Looking forward to our next get-together.

@Weezilou Ha ha, you caught my little dig there. I'm sure your bag wasn't cheap in any way! I came away with similar feelings - so many terrific pictures. Many to be used for future fillers. ;-)

@maggiemae Thanks Maggie - hey, there's always a chance for an earthquake....as you know well. Can't spend too much time worrying about it. And I have to admit that I also was seeing parts of LA that I'd never known about and never seen before too. Fun discovering your own town!

@gilbertwood Thanks Denise - anyplace is good for a meet-up with these folks, but even more so when it's so rich with photographic opportunities. Thanks for the comments!

@louannwarren Thanks so much Lou Ann. :-)
April 20th, 2017
@lyndemc Aww, thanks Denise. Your comments warm my heart! If you like the bougainvillea, wait till you see the geraniums! Coming soon!

@tunia Thanks so much Tunia. Always good to spend time with fellow 365ers, especially when they're so fun to spend time with. I'm sure you'll be seeing a whole bunch of photos from the get-together for a while here. I know I'll do my part.

@pcoulson Wow, must be a big time Deja Vu experience for you seeing these shots, Peter! It's not often someone says "I remember that tree from nine years ago." Pretty cool when you think about it. Thanks for your comments and input.

@pamknowler Thanks very much Pam. As much as you may enjoy the So Cal tour, I think we might enjoy it that much more! The folks here certainly opened my eyes to an area that I knew little about. That's always fun.

@dawnee Thanks so much Dawnee!

FYI Ron, that bag WAS cheap! That alone was half of the reason I couldn't leave without it! Ken should be thrilled I love $12 bags and not the sort they sell at Neiman's!
April 20th, 2017
@stray_shooter We both remember the area well but must admit we have an electronic picture frame that displays places we have visited and we have it running over the Christmas period, have 4 shots on it taken around this historic district of LA:)

@Weezilou My wife bought leather bags both times we visited the market in 2008 and 2011 and told me they were cheap also Louise, she still uses one but its showing its age may have to return in the future to replace it, lol:)
April 20th, 2017
@pcoulson Hi Peter! You certainly know whom to contact if and when you DO return! I look at it this way... What you'll save on high end hand bags your wife DOESN't buy will pay for the plane tickets to visit, have a good Mexican dinner and go home with at least two more Mexican-leather bags! This one with the cats that I got should do nicely for 5 years at least, and what more could I ask from a $12 bag with a pirated image ;-) ???
April 20th, 2017
@Weezilou stray_shooter I took 140 photos.

Love this image. Fabulous colors.
