the star and the sickle but where's the hammer? by summerfield

the star and the sickle but where's the hammer?

i'm referring to the russian flag of hammer and sickle and one lone star but in a red backdrop.

my eyes opened to this view this morning -- the blue hour at its height before the sun really rose above the heavy bank of clouds in the horizon. there's another star to the far right which did not register here as it was a lot smaller than the star on the left. well, they're not really stars but some distant planets.

funny thing this morning. walking to the bus stop, the streets are lined with high snow banks from the snowstorm of the previous days. i had 8 minutes to get to the bus stop. the temperature was a balmy (haha!) -20 degrees and felt a lot colder due to a strong wind. well, i thought i'd go over the snowbank and walk my normal route. that went well. but a few yards to the actual bus stop, the snowdrift had accumulated and actually "erased" the pavement. (that's when i realized why people were walking on the near side pavement and not where i was.) i had thought of plowing through the accumulated snow but that proved unrealistic when i stepped and i got submerged just to above thighs. even though it was going to be a short walk, i realized it would take me more than the 8 minutes that it was going to take. so i decided to go over the snow bank and then walk on the side of the road. the road is normally a two-way road but because of all the snow on either side it got reduced to a slightly wider lane. cars are turning from the main street to this road. patting my back mentally for wearing pants today, i started to go up the snowbank. but because it wasn't well packed yet, i literally sank in, waist high. for a few seconds i stood there, confused and wondering how i'd get out of that snow bank. so, i climbed over on all fours, my butt sticking up in the air, my backpack behind me and holding my lunch bag. a blue car that was turning in from the main road saw me and stopped at the point where she thought i'd be when i slide down the snowbank, as her little car was low on the ground and even if i go underneath it, it still would stop me from going or slipping to the other lane. then as i was brushing the snow off my coat, the car behind a red car was patiently waiting for all these to finish but i saw the driver taking photos of me. i told her i wanted a copy! she just gave me a thumbs up.

if the cold weather continues until saturday, i should be able to photograph the snowbanks.

still reading? well, thank you so much.
Great moon view - sounds as if your journey to work sounds eventful - have you checked to see if the footage has featured on YouTube?

Oh my. What a trek to the bus stop. Of course, they were taking pictures. What would you have been doing? I hope it is better on the way home. That is way too cold to be walking.

Love your descriptive stories. Takes me back to the days of living in snow hell, which was actually kind of fun....now. If you could have caught a palm tree in your photo (fat chance of that), you'd also be able to replicate the South Carolina state flag!
