"Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals. He sets them to work, he gives back to them the bare minimum that will prevent them from starving, and the rest he keeps for himself." - Animal Farm, a dystopian allegorical novella by George Orwell, published 1945
we stopped on the side of the highway to take this beautiful shot of a farm in ingersoll, ontario, on the way back from london. i liked how the trees' leaves overlapped and formed an arch, a perfect frame for the fields, the barns and the silos.
it is still sweltering hot in toronto and there's no immediate end in sight, apparently. thursday we're supposed to hit 37 degrees and factoring in the humidity index it would easily feel like 45. wow! it's like being in the middle east. this heat brings back memories.
if you're so inclined and/or interested, here's a short story i wrote a long time ago about an experience when i used to live in the sultanate of oman. only 1,750 words. enjoy. http://amatterofdistinction.blogspot.com/2009/11/vignette-pink-panther.html
(WOW! i just realized the date on my camera is a year late. how did that happen?)
i have to apologize. i had my canon and my nikon coolpix with me when we went to london. in fact, i used the nikon a lot more during that trip. i took almost 300 photos with that camera.
when i uploaded the above photo, i was wondering why it wasn't showing up for july 19 but the dashboard indicated that it was posted. it took me quite a while to figure out that it got posted to july 19, 2010 because the date of the photo was 2010.
i had just checked my nikon and after a lot of huffing and puffing, i finally figured out how to get to the date menu. indeed, the bloody thing says 2010. before sunday, i was also using it so now i have loads of photographs dated 2010, long before i even bought this camera. that's it, i'm buying a new back-up tomorrow!
perfect framing - don't you just love when you spot something already framed and ready for you..?.......and the story is awesome - and i learned something new.......never before today knew how to spell "holy camoley" - - lmao lmao....anyway, thanks for sharing!
@bkbinthecity - thank you. when in places with a wide open space, i look for things like the overlapping trees. you kind of know it happened for a reason. @sticksandstones - thanks, kiddo. i'm so glad you like both the photograph and the story. @steeler - thanks, howard. that is so nice. @altadc - thanks, alta. i take it everything's alright now? how's your dad?
lol sorry I'm just having a laugh to myself at your 'date' issue....huffing and puffing, I reckon that would've been a funny sight...
however, fabulous photo, love the framing and just to let you know it's cold, wet and windy here....
perfect framing...and love the connection with Orwell's writings!
also just to say I am without my Lumix which is in for repair...and my laptop went 'ffttttzzzz' and puffed out smoke, so it is in for repair too. I am hot-desking in a friend's office today and will only be able to access the internet a few hours a day...not only that but I will have to reload all the software onto the laptop when I get it back in a couple of weeks. It's a shock to realise how much I rely on technology! I will try and put aside some time to post comments on my 365 friends shots tho...especially you, Howard and Mick who are the most consistent in commenting on my photos
when i saw the thumbnail, at first i thought it was one of howard's photos due to the framing! fav'd. this is stunning. the quote is perfection. i will greatly enjoy reading your writing. thank you so much for sharing.
@danig - well, you know, i never had 'date' issues before, especially when i was a lot younger ;-)
@patticake - thanks; that orwell line never left my brain ever since i first read the animal farm. couple of weeks without laptop and camera?!? horrors! hope you get them back soon-er!
@ilseal - yes, that is true; i've seen such wonderful scenery like this when i was in the netherlands thirty years ago (wow! that's a long time!). thank you, ms. ilse.
