"Some people can look to the tide as a guide to the passing of the hour. Others look at a budding fruit and automatically know the month. On the edge of a silvery ocean, a pale thread of moon whispered to me: a new moon was on its way. I had been patiently counting the days..."
mister pip is a story told from the point of view of the narrator as a twelve-year old girl. the novel is set in the early nineties, in the bougainville island in papua new guinea, when there was only one white man left in the island, mr. tom watts. the local children called him popeye and he would parade into the village in his worn out white linen suit and a red clown nose on his face. he drags with him a cart, upon which his wife, grace, a local, stood holding the rails on her either side and shaded by a blue umbrella. mr. watson became the children's teacher and he read to them charles dickens' book "the great expectation" and introduced its main character, pip, to his class. then the rebels took over the island...

it's crappy weather we have today and offers no inspiration to me at all in terms of photography. this photograph is from mid july and was processed in picnik to look a tad decent and appealing. the book, however, is a fantastic read.
my friend's husband, robert adams, reviews books. the link below is a videotaped review of "mister pip" where he gives an analysis of the novel as well as the background history of the story and a little bit about the author. you will enjoy the review as well as reading the book, i promise. http://www.tvo.org/TVOsites/WebObjects/TvoMicrosite.woa?bigideas_robertadams
@cscecil@sunnygreenwood - thank you, ladies. the writing part is the easiest part, and i have read these books in the past, some twice or more. when i read a book, i do put little yellow stickies on the pages when i see a really good line. but i labour at the part where i have to match the quotes i've chosen with a photograph, especially when i don't have new ones. i tried to stage one or two for this book, but they didn't turn out well.
i had something else in mind for august, but at the last minute, i agreed with @danig that we would do this challenge for august. so here we are. so i'm kind of winging this. good thing i read a lot. :-)
@danig - thanks, DG. if you're unable to find it, let me know. i'll lend you mine. @altadc - thank you, alta (and thanks to picnik!). i lived with my partner in a farm for about three years, and you could actually get a view that resembles this, sometimes, even with the falling star. i think that's how i got this damn neck-ache. @steeler - thank you, howard. that's very sweet.
all that is missing is a little man sitting on the bottom edge of the moon with a fishing rod...but then, that wouldn't go with the story...lol. Your book reviews are making me want to read again!! I could jump into this story and lose myself quite nicely...now...where am I? Great pic! I love how you processed it.
@roth - thank you, sue. i've had that picnik account for over a month and i am just now starting to learn some of its uses, and thanks to you for this one. @slang had advised me before not to worry because i can always press 'undo' but i'm still hesitant pressing anything in there :-))
i'm thanking @danig for this challenge. i have to pull a book out of the shelf and it makes me miss reading. i have a high pile of books to read and really with everything, we just have to find the time to do it. so now, i read, i write, i photograph but mostly i go to work. isn't life grand?
and i would've done that little man with the fishing rod thing if i knew how, but i don't. yet.
i have not read this one, but now on my 'to read' list. love how you did this. very creative, and great synopsis. i, too, like this 'challenge'. not so much into challenges - competition becomes my focus instead of whatever else it is i am working on and i forget to enjoy what i am doing - does that make sense? anyway, great job. i, too, enjoy picnik.
@slang - hello, stranger. yes, slowly getting the hang of picnik. i yet have to learn how to do that selective color processing thingie. thanks, sean.
@catsmeowb - i'm liking this challenge. ever since i was little i loved reading and i've read quite a lot of books, but i only read interesting ones. i don't care so much for the 'popular' novels. a book has to grab me in the neck at the outset. the competition is with myself, as i try to remember each book's plot and premise. and to choose a good quote, and so i don't lose my focus. i know, it's easy to do that now with the internet, but sometimes the quotes i find interesting aren't in there. good thing i like to put stickies on the pages. i'm glad you're enjoying this. btw, i ordered the 'survivor' book. thank you, camille.
@jobesekama - thank you, beth. as sean said, i'm getting the hang of it.
