"As we posed for the camera, everyone acted happy. xxxTo me it seemed terribly romantic. Davey was going off to see the world...Not for the first time I felt a twinge of envy. Boys got to do all exciting things while the girls had to stay put..."
In 1942, seventeen-year old Maddy Marshall accompanied her sister-in-law Ruth to Miami where Davey, Ruth's husband, Maddy's brother, was to leave to fight the war in Europe. Maddy met Royal Air Force pilot Lt. Stephen Tull-Martin and they fell in love. On the eve of the men's departure, Ruth and Maddy, along with Davey and his friends, went to go dancing at a nightclub in Miami. They posed for a final photograph, which Ruth kept. However, Maddy was raped by one of the soldiers and became pregnant. Meanwhile, Ruth noticed that the photograph was changing, like tears in Maddy's eyes, or the disappearance of one of the people in the group and through the photograph she could tell what would happen to the people in the photograph.
The author has successfully captured the essence of people's emotion during this turbulent time in history as well as the issues that women faced during the war, parting with their family and loved ones.
"Virginia Ellis provides fans of historical tales with a powerfully descriptive look at 1942 America." - Harriet Klausner

thankfully, there was no tornado that turned out around here last night. but today the internet is rife with photographs of lightning and heavy downpour as well as large pieces of hail.
i was sitting at the patisserie three doors down from my apartment building and the golden sunlight from the setting sun is beautifully reflected on the brick wall. when you have a camera, you find beauty in the most mundane thing like this.
it is late and i must retire for the night so i will comment on everyone's posting tomorrow morning. goodnight folks!
beautiful sunlight shot!!!!! Love it! And the story sounds compelling, heart-wrenching.......!! You pick amazing books -- always leaves me wanting to read more!!! You're the best!
and so the mundane is brought to life...i love this shot dear friend, it is silence, it is art, it is a million conversations embedded in these bricks. truly lovely!
this book sounds great, maybe maybe...on the list.
patisserie eh? mmm yum sounds good! maybe after sushi we can go there, oui? ;-)
@cscecil - aww, CS. you flatter me so. but no, i'm not the best...yet! thank you so much. you're one of those that make want to continue on because there are days when i feel like i want to abandon this project.
@danig - thanks, DG. i'm so flattered. and i should take a pic of the little cakes i buy from the patisserie. why, i can make a series for next month!
@altadc - thanks, alta. it is for days when i'm uninspired or uncreative that i look at a wall and say, that's artistic enough! haha.
oh, that makes me sad to read there are days when you want to abandon this project - 365 in particular or just a certain aspect of it that your are tackling? i hope you know how much you would be missed if you choose to leave. i am inspired to read this book, that photograph as you describe it has captured me. i also really like this photo you have posted - such lovely light. have a great weekend - we are due for a nasty storm our way. i would think you might get some of it, too?
@catsmeowb - there are times i feel so uncreative and i want to stop, but i feel guilty i know if i would. maybe i'm just feeling lazy or something. but thanks for your concern, i truly appreciate that. we've had good weather since yesterday and we're supposed to have sunny (with a bit of cloudy) weather on the weekend. hope the storm weakens into a rain spit, just enough to have a decent fresh weather for you. take care.
beautiful shadows!! I'm thinking it would have been great for the windows theme...Oh, but Rosetta McLean Gardens has a nice window shot waiting to be caputred..race you!!
shadows, connections, light...the frame askew, hinting that the source of the light will move and that the image will change; represents the themes of the book wonderfully

@steeler - thanks, howard.
@jannkc - thanks, jann. the world i suppose is big enough to photograph. as i said to alta, a brick wall should be enough for uninspiring days.
@eddyj - thank you, eddy. lighting courtesy of mother nature.
