this is a very tiny vase that i bought at a garage sale during my first months in canada (wow! that's a long time ago!). the lady was selling it for $10 and i thought it was a ridiculous amount of money for such a small vase. it measures two inches by three by one. it's in very pale blue with a white butterfly.
she said it's an antique wedgewood from england. she didn't want to go any lower than $8. so i had to point out to her that it's not wedgewood. i owned a few wedgewood knick-knacks back in the old country so i knew this wasn't wedgewood. how did i know? it said right there on the bottom: 'made in china'. she said everything is made in china these days. then that made the vase not antique nor was it wedgewood. so how much did i want to pay for it? i told her fifty cents. i could see her annoyance as she peered down at me from the top of her glasses. 'a dollar' she said. i gave her eighty cents.
good thing i didn't get rid of this yet. proved useful after almost 25 years.
Love it .... gorgeous blue! And a very artistic pov. The story is wonderful .. I'm taking you shopping with me the next time I go to an antique store and/or a garage sale. :)
i got my haggling talent from my mother. i remember being with her as a small child and getting lashed out by the vendors because she would really start her bids too low. but she said it's just tactics and most times she got her way. now, i, on the other hand, is a reasonable haggler. i gauge and i try to understand why something is sold for so much. i pretty much can guess what the capital cost most of the time and i put 2% as my starting bid. i try to leave the vendor some profit, after all he/she would have to pay for some kind of overhead. thank you, ladies.

@olivetreeann - thank you, ann. it's actually pale blue but i had to do a bit of a tweak in ipiccy to enhance the blue.
