Today I proved to myself that I'm not as brave as I thought I was. Mr C went fishing so I decided i'd go for a walk. Yesterday I noticed a small path disappearing into the bracken and heather not far from our holiday cottage and there was a sign which read 'Beware Adders'. I have seen adders in the past but never photographed one so I thought I'd try and find one.
Now, for those of you from far off distant lands, adders are the UKs only venomous snake, having said that it is very shy and not at all aggressive and rarely bites humans.
Anyhow, I was wearing my boots and jeans and off I went. At one point I went off the path to investigate a flower and suddenly I saw a big fat snake slithering past my feet, then within seconds I saw another one and then another. I know it's silly but it was scary. I was surrounded by snakes!! Needless to say I got back to the path and some time later I saw this one sunning itself on a sandy bank at a safe distance! Even though it was a scary day it was exciting.
By the way, adders aren't that big. Google says they grow to about 95cm but I swear this one was 3 times that and as fat as my arm (ha-ha).
You're braver than I would have been. I would not have gone looking for them..... first of all. Nice picture, but I would not have stuck around to get it! Haha!!
Eeeek! What a scary experience! You deserve a fav for being so brave and then being surrounded by them! And then you still went looking for one to photograph :) I stay as far away as possible from any here in Australia! I also found it interesting that Julia @julzmaioro pointed out NZ has none! A fact I never knew!
Hope you treated yourself to a glass of wine when you got back to your cottage......
