We had a large Rowan tree chopped down last year to about 10 feet from the ground. It was a nice tree but blocked all the sun from the front of the house. The birds used to love it so I worried about them but in fact they love to perch on the stumps, all different kinds of birds so I don't think they mind at all that we chopped it down. An added bonus is that I get a really good view of them from the kitchen window.
