We’ve seen “the” kingfisher a few times in the last few days but what is really exciting is that it’s not always the same one. There’s sometimes a male and sometimes a female. This is the female as the lower edge of its beak is red. There’s no red on the male’s beak (according to my bird book). Nowhere does it say that kingfishers visit garden ponds 😂.
@phil_sandford Yes Phil it does have fish including lots of baby goldfish. There isn’t a stream or a river very close by but there’s a little stream not too far away and when the kingfishers fly off it’s always in the direction of that little stream. Don’t be too envious Phil, you’ve got the sparrowhawk 😊.
@bigmxx I just can’t believe we’ve got kingfishers coming into the garden, not even one but a pair!! I’d only ever seen a kingfisher twice in all my life until we started seeing them in the garden.
@stevejacob I think it’s far more common for a heron to visit a garden pond than a kingfisher but fortunately we haven’t had a heron visiting yet. Chris took great care when constructing the pond to make it very heron proof. The sides go straight down, heron’s need a ledge to stand on. We have far too many baby goldfish and the kingfishers are welcome to some but I wouldn’t want a heron to take the bigger fish.
