A friend and I went to see Oklahoma at the Lyric Opera tonite. I took my camera along to take photos of the beautiful interior, which I had planned to turn into vintage photos. But on the way home, crossing the river, I couldn't resist. The reflections just leapt out.
This is spectacular! FAV for sure! I love how the reflections shimmer so much that despite the fact they occupy less on the page than the buildings, they immediately grab attention. I had hoped to see stage photos so I could see what settings you were using to capture them -- but I see why you would pick THIS one!!
I agree with jan.. This is great. I've never done a night shot, but you've inspired me to have a go. I'm surprised that the shot is so sharp at F2. But I understand why you have used it..we learn ever day eh :)
Love this one! There is plenty of dark sky that contrasts with the light in the river and from the buildings. I like how you can see the time on the clock, too.
Thank you all for such kind comments! I appreciate it so much.
For those of you asking about the choice of f2 and still getting details with such a wide aperture, it was because I didn't have anything except my Nikon P&S, so I choice the night landscape setting, handheld. I'd not used it before, but it did fairly well SOOC. However, in Aperture, I upped the definition and upped the sharpen edges, and upped the highlights to cut down on the slight blur in some of the lighting. If I had my regular camera and tripod, I would have gone with a long exposure shot for sure. But I'd already posted for the day and my plans at the Opera House were simply to take some vintage-potential shots to play with in post processing, so I didn't bother with more than the P&S (and regretted it on the way home!).
@elaine55 Thanks...I always have this nagging feeling that when I use my camera or P&S, I am not pushing myself enough! But there are those times I just don't feel that my big camera makes sense to lug around (like graduation tonite -- trying to figure out what I can have under my gown and not look ridiculous)!
@elaine55 It was great, actually. It was local in the sense that it was put on by the Lyric and it isn't touring, but the singers weren't necessarily local (e.g., the female lead had created the role of Mary Poppins on B'way). So, it was a pretty snazzy production and we had great seats. I know I'm so lucky to be walking distance to this kind of event!
@taffy oh wow that's fabulous. We saw Mary Poppins in the West End for my oldest daughter's 18th. I miss the West End since living here as theatre is so expensive and I often had cheap or free seats in London.
@elaine55 Small world -- I took my niece to see MP in London on an 11th birthday trip for the two of us. I love London's West End and can't believe all that is available in such a small area!
It's a great place for Theatre, I have never been to Broadway but we gave our girls a trip to New York a couple of Christmas' ago and they went to a few shows. They loved Anything Goes with Sutton Foster.
@danielwsc Go for it! It's in the middle of the bridge just to the west of the Lyric, south side of the building. Pointing slightly on an angle to avoid its ugly back wall. And it definitely needs the lights to improve the look!
