"Our" sandhill cranes announced they were back yesterday at dusk, walking along the beach. Learning from last time, I snuck along the upper area of the beach to get in front of them, before walking slowly and quietly into the marsh to get a closer shot. Then, after a few shots, right in front of me, they took off -- it was spectacular to watch and I'm glad to have caught them. In this shot, I love the way their beaks are open as they were making SOOO much noise as they flew away. It felt like they really were shouting to one another. It will show up best enlarged, of course, but if you look close, even smaller the beaks show up against the water.
Posting late because about 10:00 last night, we heard a very loud "pop!" and lost all our power! The power company was able to determine that the problem was at our end. The one electrician on the island is 'off-island' for two weeks, too, so after some panic this morning, we were able to reach a retired electrician with 53 years of experience. As luck would have it, he had the exact circuit breaker we needed in his workshop! So, life is good again. Will catch up on commenting over the course of today.
Thank you all for your well-wishes to Jim for his birthday. The weekend was a huge success, including my grandson getting to fly in the co-pilot seat (on his birthday which was Sunday) on their way back to Chicago. A very memorable weekend for all!
Don't forget if you haven't voted for EOTB10, voting ends this evening!

Thanks Kazzy, Arefin, and Peter! It was amazing that I was photographing them walking as they decided to take off so my camera was already focused on them. I was able to follow them and snap for several frames which was exciting.
@danielwsc Thank you so much for the fav! This is one of those shots I feel really good about, so am glad when others think it is special. The dunes in the background are on High Island, one of three other islands we can see unless there's fog. It's our metric if planes are flying -- if we can see High, then we'll fly!
@pandora Susan, I appreciate the fav!
