Oh No! I've Met My Demise! by taffy

Oh No! I've Met My Demise!

It was a foggy, snowy day today and we are on spring break. So, I spent an absurd amount of time to create this image at a recommendation from Ross @rvwalker
1. I sliced the decaying onion til I had as thin a slice as I could get.
2. I put it on a glass table and beneath the table, built up the surface (using an upside-down pot and some cutting boards)
3. I placed a bright light facing up to backlight the onion slice.
4. I put my camera on my tripod with the macro as my lens.
5. Forgot how to turn the bar so that I could line up the camera facing downward, so did a google search. Turned out there was a button to press and that was it (great tripod, btw, the Manfrotto 190C3x)
6. Moved the onion slice around to get into position and suddenly saw a face with two wonky eyes and a mouth wide open.
7. Took bracketed shots because I couldn't tell about the best exposure
8. Cleaned up the kitchen after taken a few more photos of P3 (penguin) surveying the carnage
9. Looked at photos and learned a huge lesson.
10. DO NOT CLEAN UP before viewing photos large. I cut off the edges of its eyes.
ARGH! Everything was in the trash by then. so this is what it is.
"The Onion" -- a gift that keeps on giving. More onion to come this week.
Love it

hahahahahaha the face looks somewhat sad - maybe because you cut off the eyes - :)

Awww...all that work deserves a FAV. Thanks for letting us learn from your mistake (not that I'm in much danger of prematurely cleaning up HA HA)

Fascinating... almost like a slice of onion under a microscope. Three eyes are looking back at me. So cool. Please tell @rvwalker "hi" for me, if you would. I followed him and enjoyed his work.

Very creative and beautifully captured.

I like your commentary as much as the photo! Fun face!

Love how there is both green and purple in the onion, and so much pattern.

Fantastic shot and love the commentary. This photo reminds me of The Scream by Edvard Munch

Awesome shot. And a big fave for all of that effort. I have paid the price of packing up early as well

Wonderful Taffy! Great backlit slice! I did a similar thing early in my project with a slice of a leek. This is much more interesting with the variety of colour inside the onion! Love the sad face you have found! Great commentary too! You made me smile - just what I needed this morning! Fav!

Clever - and well worth the effort.

Ah the lessons we learn. I've learned that one two. So then I start playing and sometimes it is days before I put everything away. Of course I wasn't playing with a smelly onion.
March 24th, 2015
Fabulous photo and I love the blow-by-blow!
March 24th, 2015
Brilliant and I love the narrative.

Cool shot
March 24th, 2015
Super!
March 24th, 2015
Very cool! I liked the bit of mystery as I tried to figure out what it was before reading your description. I thought cells at first, and then some kind of marbled rock. Nice shot!
March 24th, 2015
Makes for an interesting abstract look...I like the colors and mat-like textures
March 24th, 2015
You are getting great value from your rotten onions.

Wonderful shot and description. I have a few rotting red onions in the shed ..... maybe ... or maybe not!
March 24th, 2015
Super abstract
March 24th, 2015
Love the colors and details!
March 24th, 2015
Such a funky face.....one of the eyes is open, the other one half closed....the mouth lopsided.....the nose drawn by Picasso.....such a cool shot!! No worries.....there will be another onion sprouting soon! ;-))
March 24th, 2015
LOVE IT!!! A piece of total silliness
March 24th, 2015
Wonderful capture!
March 25th, 2015
I don't think an onion has ever received this much attention - EVER!
March 25th, 2015
I just love your story. It made me laugh as to the lengths we go for a shot. This looks very fun, and I like the wonky face.
March 25th, 2015
Perhaps there were tears in your eyes from cutting up the onion. I leave an arranged scene sometimes long after I know I have the picture, mostly because I get busy looking at other's pictures on 365 and forget to go clean up the mess.
March 25th, 2015
I admire you dedication! You always inspire me Taffy!
March 25th, 2015
LOL that would be way too much work for me! I'd just slice it thin, put it on a white plate on the floor in the sunlight, stand over it and shoot! I am LAZY when it comes to setting up shots! For me, it doesn't matter whether I see the face of not- I like the geometric pattern. Well done!
March 25th, 2015
Congratulations on making the PP. Well deserved.
March 25th, 2015
