The Swimmer by taffy

The Swimmer

For my mentor group. This month, we are focusing on focal length -- looking at a scene from three different lengths. This is a hotel/club across the street from our condo and as you can see, we look down onto their rooftop swimming pool. It's fascinated us as it's been open through the winter. Today there was a lone swimmer using it and I thought it would be fun to capture the swimmer versus the context for the first day of the month's focus on focal length. This was taken with my 70-300 with the top and bottom ones at the extreme and the middle shot somewhere in the middle. I did a little cropping to emphasize swimmer, swimming pool, and the overall building in context.

This was fun! Jim looked down and noticed the swimmer and I had my camera set from last night's night captures. I hope this is what you had in mind!

This is a great shot Taffy. A great example of the 'same' scene but looking very different just with a simple zoom

This is so cool!

Wow! Can't believe you can zoom so much and so clearly. Wonderful displayed as a collage like this. Great start, I'm looking forward to experimenting.

Great way to show how a scene changes by zooming in.

Vey very cool ! The shots AND the pool !!!

Love the zoom effect here.

A great insight into the zoom effect, nicely presented :)

Great triptych Taffy! How I wish I could go for a swim outdoors right now!

Your condo must be pretty high up to look down on a rooftop swimming pool... but what a great perspective you have on the world around you! Love the trio of shots... great for the focal length challenge.

Thanks to that lens, it would seem you were shooting from entirely different vantage points. Wonderfully fun!

Cool collage!

@calm We are high up (this is temporary until we get back into our place which is being reconstructed after a fairly serious fire last November) -- on the 33rd floor.
April 1st, 2015
@newbank I was using a tripod and external shutter release or never would have been stable enough to get the shot from the same perspective. I just made sure I had enough room to extend the lens and not hit the window.
April 1st, 2015
@darylo It's almost up to 60 degrees -- to me still a bit cold to be out there swimming, but I'm assuming the pool is heated!

very effective demonstration of the zoom

Nicely done!

Oh this is brilliant Taffy!! What a perfect start for the theme!! Love the colours and they all look so good in the collage. So perfect being high above to be able to get this set of shots!!
My mind hasn't been on photos for the last few days - I must get my act together.

Wonderful collage. Wonder if the swimmer had any idea?!
April 2nd, 2015
Fabulous triptych and excellent zoom. I hope the pool is heated as I am sure it is still pretty chilly in your part of the world.

@linnypinny Great -- tag us (we're listed in the first comment box, except for me) if you do. It would be fun to see.
April 2nd, 2015
@danette I doubt it -- I was about 23 floors above him (her?). So I don't think they can see into our place from that rooftop, even if they are looking.
April 2nd, 2015
@mcsiegle We're going to really miss it when our house is finished and we can move back home. The one silver lining of the fire has been having this amazing condo for the past 6 months!
April 2nd, 2015
Very cool!
April 2nd, 2015
Lovely different views. Would not catch me swimming in winter.
April 2nd, 2015
Good demonstration of focal length vis-à-vis PoV - so were there people swimming when there was snow on the roof? I've done this in the Pyrenees but that was in a pool supplied by a thermal spring... and the water had to be cooled first!

love it

Fantastic collage.

There is something very lonely about this person swimming on a roof.
April 2nd, 2015
Great and interesting captures Taffy. I've bookmarked them as I would like to try something similar. Hope you don't mind!
April 2nd, 2015
This is awesome! Did you feel like a undercover spy?
April 2nd, 2015
Aside from just being a great shot- it's amazing to me that someone is OUTSIDE swimming! I mean, it's not THAT warm yet!! I'm sure the pool is heated, but still- you have to get in and out of it at some point. The whole scene- whether zoomed in or not really has a "spy" feeling to it because of the focal length. Fun shot for your lesson/challenge!
April 2nd, 2015
Oh what a fabulous place to swim, way up there.
April 2nd, 2015
Neat images.

Cool triptych.
April 4th, 2015
Great collage, and that's a cool pool
April 5th, 2015
Again, this is a perfect illustration of how altering focal length significantly affects the main subject of a photo. Love these three, that bloke would have had no idea he was on candid camera! Wow, what a view you have from your eyrie.
April 6th, 2015
What a great set of 3, I really like them. I love your view from your place, and this was a great way to show it off. This is a perfect way to show the wider view of where the swimmer was.
