For my mentor group. This month, we are focusing on focal length -- looking at a scene from three different lengths. This is a hotel/club across the street from our condo and as you can see, we look down onto their rooftop swimming pool. It's fascinated us as it's been open through the winter. Today there was a lone swimmer using it and I thought it would be fun to capture the swimmer versus the context for the first day of the month's focus on focal length. This was taken with my 70-300 with the top and bottom ones at the extreme and the middle shot somewhere in the middle. I did a little cropping to emphasize swimmer, swimming pool, and the overall building in context.

This was fun! Jim looked down and noticed the swimmer and I had my camera set from last night's night captures. I hope this is what you had in mind!
Your condo must be pretty high up to look down on a rooftop swimming pool... but what a great perspective you have on the world around you! Love the trio of shots... great for the focal length challenge.
@calm We are high up (this is temporary until we get back into our place which is being reconstructed after a fairly serious fire last November) -- on the 33rd floor.
@newbank I was using a tripod and external shutter release or never would have been stable enough to get the shot from the same perspective. I just made sure I had enough room to extend the lens and not hit the window.
Oh this is brilliant Taffy!! What a perfect start for the theme!! Love the colours and they all look so good in the collage. So perfect being high above to be able to get this set of shots!!
My mind hasn't been on photos for the last few days - I must get my act together.
@danette I doubt it -- I was about 23 floors above him (her?). So I don't think they can see into our place from that rooftop, even if they are looking.
@mcsiegle We're going to really miss it when our house is finished and we can move back home. The one silver lining of the fire has been having this amazing condo for the past 6 months!
Good demonstration of focal length vis-à-vis PoV - so were there people swimming when there was snow on the roof? I've done this in the Pyrenees but that was in a pool supplied by a thermal spring... and the water had to be cooled first!
Aside from just being a great shot- it's amazing to me that someone is OUTSIDE swimming! I mean, it's not THAT warm yet!! I'm sure the pool is heated, but still- you have to get in and out of it at some point. The whole scene- whether zoomed in or not really has a "spy" feeling to it because of the focal length. Fun shot for your lesson/challenge!
Again, this is a perfect illustration of how altering focal length significantly affects the main subject of a photo. Love these three, that bloke would have had no idea he was on candid camera! Wow, what a view you have from your eyrie.
What a great set of 3, I really like them. I love your view from your place, and this was a great way to show it off. This is a perfect way to show the wider view of where the swimmer was.
