Shoes on the Danube Bank

A very moving monument to honour the 3500 people who were shot into the river during World War ll. The sculptor, Gyula Pauer, created 60 pairs of period-appropriate shoes made of iron to represent the shoes that the people were made to remove before they were killed.

That's a very sobering photo. It brought back a memory of a glass case in the IWM filled with thousands of shoes from WW2. Very powerful.
