A couple of months ago I met the lady that lives in this house. We were both waiting for a bus to Lichfield, and we got chatting about the big hole in the hedge next to us, caused by a chap driving through it nearly three years ago.
It turns out she volunteers at the Staffordshire Regimental Museum at Whittington Barracks, not too far from here, and she mentioned that there might be some mesh fencing there that we could have.
I thought nothing more of it, and went off to Florida to do all things Disney. When we got back we noticed a roll of fencing on our drive. Dirk and I attached this new section to the old stuff in the hedge, and planted a few hawthorn sprigs around it. We had tried numerous times and ways over the years to get the gap filled officially since it had happened, but with no luck. Then, would you believe it, two weeks after we put the fence in some gardeners turned up and planted it out with big healthy hawthorn bushes!!
It took me a few weeks but I was determined to thank that lady, so I wrote out a card and bought some flowers and set off to find her house (she said she lived in one of the roads behind us). As soon as I got round to those roads I spotted a house with a Union Jack flag on a pole, a red/white/blue knitted wreath on the door and an array of ornaments and whatnots around the front. I just knew it was hers. I knocked on the door and there she was. We chatted for ages about the neighbourhood etc, then we said goodbye with a hug. A lovely, kind lady, bordering on ‘a bit crackers’ but I’d go for that in a friend any day ☺️
I love your narrative....it's rare these days to hear about the good people in the world. Eccentric and eclectic can make for a very interesting person! Perfect photo to go with the story!
I loved reading your story, Lesley! How wonderful to have found her and to have deepened your connection! Your photo holds a lot of warmth and character! Well done on both fronts! Fav
