Abbatiale Saint Sauveur, Redon, Brittany

This is the Abbey Church of the former St. Saviour's Abbey in Redon, Brittany. The core of this church dates from 832AD and in the middle-ages, the Abbey itself was a powerful ecclesiastical and political institution. Today the Abbey buildings are home to the Lycée St. Sauveur - a Catholic High School with 1,000 students - and the church itself is the Parish Church of Redon.

I really wanted to convey the stunning vision that greets the visitor who steps through the doors of this magnificent building but the huge dynamic range of the lighting makes it impossible to capture the feeling exactly. The nave, unusually, has no windows and is very dark - initially, it is difficult to see one's surroundings. At the end of the nave is the Coeur - the Chancel - which, unusually again, contains several tiers of clear glass windows and so is flooded with light. The effect is literally breathtaking.

This image doesn't do the building justice but viewing on black helps.
What a wonderful church! Thank you for posting this!

I think you did an amazing job of capturing the darkness and the light.

You can see it is designed so this end of the church is illuminated in natural light! Huge church - when does a church become a cathedral?

@maggiemae The word Cathedral comes from the latin word 'cathedra' meaning seat. A cathedral is a church in which the Bishop of the diocese has his seat.

Another amazing ecclesiastical structure....beautiful light, indeed! You make me wistfully think of a colleague who passed away a few years back....he was an architect who decided to create a book of church renderings that he painfully illustrated in ink by hand....he would have loved some of your images!

Divine. Very much like the size of the altar statues: they make such an impact.

What a beautiful sanctuary! I am a little surprised to see what appears to be individual chairs rather than pews. I just noticed that you can seemingly see more detail when viewed on black. FAV!
