Fight to the death by wakelys

Fight to the death

We watched two fighting kingfishers. On googling their behaviour apparently young females will fight to the death to claim their territory. Not the best detail but when overwhelmed by witnessing this taking the photo is secondary.
Wow, they look fearsome

Oh, awesome. I have seen and photographed them doing this before. I will have to dig out the photographs again. During the action I saw, they were on two branches, one above each other. As the lower one fly up, the upper bird managed to catch its head in it beak and just held on. They were like that for a while, just hanging as one unit. The lower one eventually stopped wriggling, realising it was stuck. Then the upper bird calmly released its grip on the branch and they both plunged under water and stayed under for what seemed like ages. Eventually both birds finally resurfaced and flew off in different directions.
Like you it was amazing to watch.
