Celebrate the merry, merry month of May by shooting those lovely May flowers. While the northern hemisphere has embraced Spring (at least in most places!) and the southern hemisphere is settling in to Fall, take time to stop and photograph the roses, asters and all other things floral! Choose subject matter from our suggested list or find your own. Tag your photos May-flowers so others can check in and see what you're doing or feel free to post your photos on the discussion thread.
Floral Ideas:
Floral shots- real or silk, macro or not, keep your eyes open for the beauties who belong to the wonderful world of flowers.
Plants- it may not be blooming, but it's still beautiful; capture its beauty.
Tools of the trade- spades, flowers pots, wheelbarrows, rakes, etc. There's more than just flowers involved in gardening.
Manflowers- Some of us are not drawn to those fluffy pink flowers, but we love the spokes of a wheel or the rust on a tire rim. As long as your man-flower looks like a flower, it's a May-flowers subject!
Floral landscapes- a field, a park, a florist shop, a floral arrangement that brightens a room and even the forest floor can serve as a reminder that flowers are everywhere and truly brighten our lives.
Revisit a flower shot- and try some new processing techniques. It might be dreary, rainy or even snowy outside, but there's a world of sunshine and effects in your computer or camera. Have some fun playing with a shot you've already taken or trying out an effect on a new one.
Explore other shooting modes- it's natural to shoot a flower in color, but try some flower shots in black and white or sepia. This might be particularly interesting for those of you who are heading towards Fall and Winter.
Floral patterns- Having trouble finding a flower of the day? Look for decorative flowers that are "growing" about you.
We look forward to seeing what your creativity produces!
I might pop in and out of this one - I'm thinking I'll focus on the girls for a bit as they didn't get much attention in April (oddly for being too colourful!)... but I do have two albums so anything is possible!
Thank you for coming up with this idea. I was trying to think of what to do in May and I was not getting very far. I love flowers and Spring so this challenge is great for me.
I'm loving Bulldogs words for May and may try to fit some flowers with those. In my photos I have a huge album called blooming so I could do a 365 just on flowers, obviously a favorite topic. We'll see how it plays out
Hello everyone!! Thanks for joining me in my merry romp through the flowers during May. I love the shots that are already posted and am looking forward to many more! I'm a bit behind due to some furniture shifting and such around the house, but I'll be posting my first shot later tonight. Whether you're taking one or two or one each day, it's going to be a fun challenge to share with you. Happy snapping!
I've got a couple from Technicolor April that I'll "back tag" for this! And our flowers are just beginning to bloom, so (unless the SNOW we're forecast for tonight kills my early blooms off), so there will be more to come! Great idea!
Here are a few unique shots: despite the fact that it's May, Mother Nature saw fit to dump 4 inches of snow on us last night! Apparently April showers bring Christmas.
@smithak Beautiful!! @mace508 Oh no! We've had snow in April a few times, but not in May- I feel so badly for you!! But you made the most of it with these great floral/snow shots!
@olivetreeann Thanks for your comments! Snow in May is not unheard of, but it's pretty darn rare! The only good thing about it is that it will likely be gone by the weekend. :)
@nicoleterheide I love your magnolia shot Nicole! And I think your mystery flower looks like Myrtle. It's a very pretty ground covering whose leaves are the color of ivy and in Spring it puts out those pretty little purply blue flowers. I've also seen some people call it Periwinkle, but I'm not sure if they're really one in the same.
@janetoner What an interesting looking plant Jane! The leaves remind me of an Azalea. Gum nuts- I don't think I've heard of them before but I like the way they look!
@cookie123 You can do both Bernadette. Some people check in by the tag- some come back to the discussion thread and see what's posted here. I try to remember to do both. Which reminds me I have to put up yesterday's shot and today's too! If you do post them here, I try to make note of it just to let you know someone did see it.
@chrismarfil So glad to see you added this in Chris! @rich101 Love your dandelion shot Rich! @victoriaboyd Happy forsythia! @suesmith Thank you for adding these lovely shots to our thread Sue! @mace508 Hooray! Jane, Rich, Barbara, Mace, Robert, Sue and Sandy- wow what beautiful flower shots!! My apologies for getting a few days behind, but how great is it to scroll through your shots with all these amazing colors!
@aforart Beautiful shot Amanda! You should do more flowers! @havrotb What a gorgeous row of tulips Barbara! And the yellow cluster is beautiful too. @plainjaneandnononsense I had not heard that before. Yes, more exotic for sure. It's too bad they're such pests, because Dandelions really are quite pretty.
@pachelbel Your floral shots are absolutely beautiful Veronica! @potsbypam I'm glad to see you've posted your flowers here Pam- so many pretty ones from this month! @nadaa Very unique roses! Nice shot. @pandorasecho This is gorgeous!

The man flowers concept cracks me up! Haha! I had forgotten what it meant and was like "what is a man flower?" Haha I will do some flowers this month if I can get a good shot. I did get a nifty fifty lens so that might help. I am not very good at flower photography.
@olivetreeann haha! Sounds like he song Put a Ring on It! Did u get my reply to u on mad Minute challenge? I hope it helped explain it. But the one I am hosting is MICKLE and pic must be posted tomorrow on Sunday's album spot. So hunt for a mickle of something or set up a shot of a mickle of something. And I will put a bug on a flower. Haha
@espyetta I'm so behind on everything MaryBeth- I'm probably seeing this comment before I see the other and you'll probably see my shot before you see this response- but yes, I did manage to find a mickle of may flowers today which I will post after I feel I've made some headway with the comments left on my previous photos. I fear I may just have to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch!
Thank you MaryBeth, Pam, Jane, Beckie, Marloes and Ginny for posting those beautiful flowers! I am amazed at how many different kinds and varieties of blossoms are out there. And these shots really show off their beauty!
@olivetreeann Hey Ann! May has been crazy for me and I JUST saw this fun theme! Here's my post for today. I also went back and tagged some other flower shots that I took. This is perfect seeing that I just bought a ton of flowers to fill my pots!
@tara11 The nice thing about this one is that you can jump in and out at will. Glad to see you'll have a bunch to share. What pretty colors on this one!
I've been reading about white boxes and so I mimicked the effect by using a white bucket placed in bright, low sun. I really like the diffused light effect and I'll be playing around with this more.
@sassyinma Wonderful shots Sandi! I love Jack in the Pulpits and your Bleeding Heart is so vibrant! And not to be outdone, the Tulip is lovely as well! Thanks for posting them here!
@pachelbel What a beautiful and soft color Veronica!
