Please Vote: Pinhole Challenge

March 12th, 2021
This was an effort for the adventurous souls on 365. Pinhole is both an acquired taste and an art to be practiced. We did not have many entries. My own experience with pinhole is exclusively with film. For these entries I believe a lens cap with a pinhole drilled in were used on digital cameras. Several of the images are striking, and capture the ethereal beauty of pinhole, an art practiced back to the time of Leonardo DaVinci during his use of a camera obscura.

To explore the beauty of the pinhole medium in film, visit the site of Jesus Joglar, my friend and fellow member of the Film Shooter's Collective, here:

If the challenge lives to see the light of day again (literally) here are a few recommendations: 1) place the camera on a tripod or other stable surface; 2) either use a self timer or a remote shutter release 3) since the effective aperture is so small, everything is or should be in focus so including a prominent subject in the foreground is sometimes a good idea; 4) for a lens cap drilled pinhole, make sure to sand the inside and outside edges smooth, otherwise the light entering the sensor or film will be inconsistent; 5) a small drilled hole covered with tinfoil pierced with the head of a sewing pin makes a good pinhole if the foil edges are worked smooth (suggestion from a 365'er) 6) try pinhole with film using inexpensive kits available from many places. I have posted all of the images entered, and hope the winner will decide to give this another run and those who participated will persevere. Once pinhole is mastered, the rewards are there for the taking. See for yourself!

The voting will remain open until 5 p.m US EST on Friday March 19. Again, thanks to all for participating.

They're all great! I tried this a few years ago. For a digital camera, after you drill a 1mm hole in the middle of a spare lens cap, you then tape a cut-out piece of tin can (a soda can works best) over the hole using black electrical tape. Then, use a pin or needle to poke the tiniest hole you can in the middle. You will think the hole is way too small, but it won't be. Don't twirl or twist the pin while it's making the hole or it will be too big. Barely poke the pin in to make the hole as small as possible. Hope this helps anyone who might be interested in trying it!
